With cheerful greetings and pesky questions, Kaoru plays a role that appears almost too easygoing for a lieutenant. Being loud is a trait they have retained since warming up to their life in the yakuza -- it makes them heard, and helps them influence the moods of those around them. All too often, it also means they may be perceived as a nuisance: too rowdy, too annoying. Nonetheless, they are very keen on making their presence known.

While Kaoru is not what others would conventionally consider intelligent, they are resourceful in situations that require creative, on-the-spot, and practical solutions. Despite their profession, they try their best to avoid dishonorable conduct. When push comes to shove, however, they will not hesitate to achieve their goals with underhanded tactics. They are not above using devious ways out if they are in a predicament.

Kaoru is loyal, almost to a fault. On one hand, they will promise any favor, perform any feat, and support any cause for their loved ones. Such tasks they will complete in earnest. They might not be the most hardworking person among a crowd, but they would certainly win a participation ribbon for enthusiasm. On the other hand, their loyalty also means they do not always think for themselves. In their eyes, their loved ones could never do wrong. Backstabbing friends, therefore, is the easiest way to get Kaoru to distrust a person. Even subjective situations may be considered betrayal in their book -- one that will be awarded with exactly what a person paid for. An eye for an eye, they say.

Dedication to Ryokuu, and in extension the Suzukaze family, is something Kaoru takes great pride in. Members of the Suzukaze family are like real blood relatives, and they try their best to be available for the family. They can be especially perceptive when it involves people’s problems, feelings, and opinions, and attack these topics head on. Unfortunately, this can also come off as extremely meddlesome. They simply won’t drop a subject until it has been addressed, and will continuously bother individuals until they are let in on the details -- think of motherly instincts, coupled with the behavior of a ten-year old.

Although Kaoru acts warm, it is not completely in their nature to be so selfless. Rather, they are more inclined towards envy and competition. Thoughts of “I could have done that better than you” or “You didn’t actually deserve that much recognition” constantly pop up in their mind. However, their insecurities overrule their desire to be in the spotlight. They are dependent on the idea of being needed by others, and are willing to make concessions for the sake of this stability. In short, they repress their opinions and wants, as well as all the negative thoughts they have of others -- so much so that they don’t even realize it themselves.

Despite all the ups and downs they have gone through, along with their tendency to avoid thinking about their own needs, Kaoru is sentimental. They are the type to see value in every experience, and believe others have their own story as well.
